This just out: Turnitin has released “Rethink Feedback”–themed resources to help K-12 teachers and higher education instructors teach proper methods of attribution and help improve student writing skills in response to the ongoing priority teachers place on not only improving writing skills but educating students about plagiarism and integrity. New resources and tools in Turnitin’s back-to-school program, “Rethink Feedback,” help K-12 teachers and higher education instructors teach proper methods of attribution and improve student writing skills.

The free back-to-school resources include:

1. In the Loop: Feedback Quiz – This 12-question, online self-teaching tool helps students understand the value of feedback and explains how to get the most from feedback and how to respond to instructor feedback, while encouraging students to separate feedback from evaluative measures like grades.
2. Feedback that Makes the Grade – 78% of students say they want feedback from teachers, but how do they feel about the feedback teachers are giving? This infographic lists five tips for fantastic feedback, details how students use and think about feedback, and explains what makes feedback effective in the classroom.
3. Aiming for Integrity Analysis – How well do students understand plagiarism? Compiling over 12,500 data points from over 25,000 responses to Turnitin’sPlagiarism Quiz, this report helps educators understand student perceptions of plagiarism and citation methods.
4. Plagiarism Spectrum – This infographic defines 10 different types of plagiarism. Each type has been given an easy-to-remember moniker to help students and instructors better identify and discuss the ramifications of plagiarism in student writing. Request posters for classrooms, or download a student handout or the full study.
   “Teachers intuitively know—and research supports—that there are best practices to giving feedback to students in writing exercises,” said Jason Chu, education director at Turnitin. “Feedback that is appropriately constructive, specific, actionable, and given at the right time drastically improves how much a student learns about good writing.”

Turnitin has been a leader in promoting and supporting teachers in how to give appropriate feedback leading to improved writing skills. Earlier this year, Turnitin addedRevision Assistant to its product lineup. Turnitin Revision Assistant, for grades 6-12 and developmental writing in higher education, extends teachers’ reach by giving students immediate formative feedback during the writing process.

It’s America’s birthday and I’m celebrating. I have an Army son heading off overseas and a Navy daughter doing her thing stateside. I’m toasting both of them today!What I write today will be… anything I want–gibberish, a short story, guest articles on crazy topics. I have no idea. My son’s in Kuwait protecting America’s distant shores. My daughter’s in San Diego preparing her LPD for some future battle. I’m here, thanking both of them and every other service member who accepted the calling to protect our nation’s freedoms.

I’ve written about Turnitin’s great programs for classrooms (see this review on Revision Assistant). Their focus is always on how to help teachers and students, and now they’ve announced their Global Innovation Awards, a way you can honor teachers readers think demonstrate excellence in the field. Here’s their press release:

Turnitin has opened nominations for the 2016 Global Innovation Awards program, which recognizes educators who demonstrate excellence in promoting academic integrity, student engagement and the innovative use of Turnitin to support learning in their schools, colleges, and institutions. The Global Innovation Awards includes a category recognizing students demonstrating excellence in writing, improvement of their own skills or those of their peers, and the promotion of academic integrity at their school or institution. 

Educators and administrators can nominate themselves or their peers, and students. The nomination process gives educators an opportunity to share lessons, classroom examples, instructional screenshots and videos. Award finalists and winners will receive recognition among the 1.6 million Turnitin educators, 30 million student users, and hundreds of thousands of followers of Turnitin.

“To be honored with a Turnitin Global Innovation Award has validated both my research and teaching practice,” said Dr. Zeenath Khan, assistant professor, University of Wollongong in Dubai, UAE, a 2015 winner. “Motivating students to write and revise their work, and to understand the value of academic integrity, will help them throughout their academic and professional lives.”

Nominations for educators will be accepted until August 8, 2016 in three categories: overall innovation, academic integrity and student engagement. Winners and finalists in seven regions (Africa & Middle East, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, Europe, Latin America & Caribbean, United Kingdom, United States & Canada) will be selected after an interview and evaluation by an international panel of academic experts. Students will be evaluated on writing improvement and commitment to academic integrity. Winners will be announced in October 2016.

One of my favorite classroom management tools is Turnitin, especially with the addition of Revision Assistant–one of the most comprehensive virtual writing assistants available to students (here’s my review of Revision Assistant).

Well, now Turnitin has launched Feedback Studio. It’s a revamp of their flagship product, with some twists:

I’m taking next week off. I’ll be preparing for my daughter’s holiday visit from her home in DC and my son who’s visiting from El Paso TX (Ft. Bliss–though, now he tells me he may not make it. Argh). I am so excited to see both of them!

In the USA, Veterans Day annually falls on November 11. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918. Veterans are thanked for their services to the United States on Veterans Day.

When the first school guidance counselors (update: thanks to those in the profession who took the time to educate me on their title) emerged in the late 1800’s, they were almost exclusively vocational counselors, their purpose to assist students in transitioning from an educational environment to a productive piece of society. Quickly, this morphed to helping students determine the career path best-suited for their innate abilities, interests, and skills. It didn’t take long for those in the trenches to connect student success after school to the path followed during school–which included much more than grades. Counselors took on myriad tasks, such as:

• helping failing students find a remedy
• encouraging teachers to make connections between what they taught  and occupational problems
• consulting student standardized tests to determine what should/could be expected of students
• urging students to stay in school
• interviewing students leaving school to validate their decision
• promoting character development
• teaching socially appropriate behavior
• assisting vocational planning
• promoting best practices in academic development (readiness to learn and achievement strategies)
• encouraging career development and planning (academic advising, school to post secondary or career transitions, and workforce effectiveness)
• ensuring appropriate social skills and self-management as well as facing challenges to school success including bullying, suicide, addictions, and abuse
• providing connectedness to school, community, state and nation
• helping students understand societal events such as Sandy Hill and Hurricane Katrina
