Q: I can’t convince my students to give up their paper and pencil. What’s a great reason that will resonate with them?
A: Digital writing is easier to edit. By a factor of infinity. Anyone who has tried to erase knows they often end up with smudged notes and torn paper. The digital version of editing with a simple overtype or insert is miles ahead. Why force students to use an inferior method?

I keep finding more and more reasons to like digital. And then there’s a few to hate it!
Why not have a friendly competition? Time a writing assignment for some who use digital writing tools against those who use paper and pencil Even though I started using computers in my middle school classroom in 1979, I still wrote my rough drafts with paper and pencil for many years. Habits die hard.
I do that as a way to convince kids that typing is faster than keyboarding. By 5th grade (after learning keyboarding since Kindergarten), they believe me!
