Teacher-Authors: What’s Happening on my Writer’s Blog

A lot of teacher-authors read both my Ask a Tech Teacher education blog and my writer’s blog, WordDreams. In this monthly column, I share a popular post from the past month:

Casey, my beautiful, beloved Labrador is finally four, out of the Terrible Twos and the Threatening Threes. He’s our fourth lab, and by far our most problematic. Here’s what I mean:

At two, he was diagnosed with elbow dysplasia which is like hip dysplasia but in the arms. That requires ongoing treatment which should be mild until he’s older. Then, we’ll see.

Elbow dysplasia under control–for the moment

At three, he developed broken ACLs in both legs. This required four surgeries, big metal plates in both legs, bone grafts in the left, a special diet, a panoply of medications (to treat that and related symptoms), and a whole lot of personalized help with every part of Casey’s day.

Huge metal plates; staples–the dots are bone grafts to strengthen his bones

This leg had three surgeries; the L leg had one (it’s doing pretty well)

Somewhere in the middle of treating these, he developed skin conditions that are ongoing. The surgeon-vet wanted us to see a canine dermatologist but Casey and his pack had run out of patience with probing and pilling from new doctors so we’re trying medicated pads, prayers, and crossing our fingers.

He’s allergic to something but no one can figure out what

Casey is afraid of everything. He won’t go out the front door without us first, won’t even access a door unless it’s wide open. He has a lot of hiding places in the house.

Won’t go through open door

He hops down stairs like a bunny, plods rather than prances when he walks, but his tail always wags and he still loves his zoomies. Here are a few more pictures of the Birthday Dog:

I can’t wait to see what he’s like at ten. We love him more each day. Happy birthday, beautiful pup!
