Monday, September 2nd, is America’s Labor Day. It was originally organized to celebrate labor association strengths and contributions to the United States economy. Now, it has become a day of rest, the traditional end of the summer, and a last chance to make trips or hold outdoor events.

  2. I like that we have a holiday to celebrate working. I respect anyone who is willing to put in an honest day’s work.

    1. I do, too, and it feels good at the end. I love a good vacation, but often the joy of that is a break from the joy of working.

  3. I’m glad we have Labor Day (and plenty of other national holidays). We all need time off to rest and reenergize.

    What I’m not thrilled about is the trivialization of what holidays are supposed to celebrate or commemorate. As you pointed out, Labor Day used to celebrate the huge role that unions (for all their imperfections) played in shaping modern American society. Now, it’s just the last day of a three-day weekend and (in many, but not all places) the day before the start of a new school year.

    I’m a writer, so I worked yesterday. I’m moving back to Florida next month, and even though I won’t finish my work-in-progress before I leave, I want to move it closer to the finish line for a December release.
